What Is A Belly Button Piercing?

Belly button piercing is a name commonly attributed to a navel piercing, and even though done by both sexes, it is predominantly observed in females. Compared to other piercing, it takes a little longer to heal but when proper care is taken this delicate piercing heals well. Similar to ear piercing that has very little movement and repudiation, belly button piercing is the same with the occasional occurrence of the above mentioned risks.

As with all procedures, there should no side effects if proper care is administered afterwards. There is unfortunately the 1% of the population whose bodies just refuse to heal and eventually require the removal of the ring.

To avoid irritation of the belly button piercing loose clothing should be worn several weeks following the procedure to avoid friction that will slow down the healing process. Other things to consider are belts, waistline of pants and skirts because of the location of the piercing. Movement should also be approached gently such as bending over as that might be painful for several weeks after the piercing.

Even though the navel can be pierced at any number of angles and different sides, below is a brief description of the common types of navel piercing.

Upper Rim - This is piercing that occurs at the top of the belly button ring and is a typical navel piercing.

Lower Rim - Piercing is done at the bottom of the belly button ring and is also known as bottom navel piercing.

Outtie - Piercing in which the belly button itself is pierced. Even though some people consider this true navel piercing it is rarely done because of the complications that follow it. Healing is extremely slow and displacement can occur. Since the risks outweigh the benefits, it is not worth it. Surface piercing around the navel can be done for people who are interested in circular piercing even though purists do not consider this belly button piercing.
